The University of Leeds received its Charter as an independent institution from Edward VII in 1904. Since, Leeds has developed into one of the UK’s top research universities with more than 61% of our research rated as ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent,’ securing the University 14th place in the UK for research quality, and 8th place for research power in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). Academic excellence is one of our core values and we conduct research of international importance to shape our lives – from changing our understanding of an art form to improved treatments for disease.
From blue skies thinking and core sciences, through to innovation ready for commercialisation, we challenge accepted thinking and influence policy. Our experts represent their fields in global and national organisations such as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the UK Food Standards Agency.
We are one of the largest research-based institutions in the UK and in 2010/11 attracted £124m of research income. We’re also one of the main centres for postgraduate teaching in the country, with over 8,000 postgraduate students from all over the UK and another 144 countries.
