Research to Policy Fellowships: Six Pillars for Optimising Success

A toolkit to support research to policy fellowships, outlining six value-based pillars to build strong foundations and ensure successful collaborations.

Based upon a review of CAPE Policy Fellowships, this toolkit outlines six value-based key pillars that build a strong foundation for successful placements for academics in policy organisations. These pillars lay the conditions needed to help optimise the value of Policy Fellowships for fellows, their university, and the host policy organisation. For each pillar we outline:

  • How and why this pillar contributes to a successful fellowship
  • Practical suggestions for implementation
  • Skills required to support the pillar
  • Case studies illustrating the pillar in action

“Research to Policy Fellowships: Six Pillars for Optimising Success” is relevant for professionals who work in universities and policy organisations who support the mobility of people between academia and policy, especially by facilitating Policy Fellowships. This guide can be used by those new to facilitating Policy Fellowships or for ongoing initiatives. The guide will be equally useful for both the policy host and Policy Fellow themselves, to provide them with practical foundations upon which to build a successful collaboration.
