The University of Greenwich has its origins in Woolwich Polytechnic, founded in 1890 to provide accessible technical and professional education for the local community in south‑east London. Established during a period of industrial change, the Polytechnic played a key role in widening participation in higher and vocational education. Over the 20th century, it expanded its academic scope and student population, becoming Thames Polytechnic in 1970 to reflect its growing regional role.

In 1992 the institution was granted university status, adopting the name University of Greenwich. Since then it has developed into a modern university with strengths in teaching, research and external engagement. Today the University of Greenwich is recognised for its strong civic mission coupled with a global outlook, serving students, communities and diverse stakeholders in London, the South East, nationally and around the world.  With three main campuses at Greenwich, Avery Hill and Medway, the university combines the rich setting of its distinctive historic estate with a forward-looking commitment to research, innovation and public engagement.

The university has well‑established strengths in applied, interdisciplinary research across areas of clear relevance to public policy, including education, public health, social care, environmental sustainability, maritime and logistics, engineering, business, planning and the creative industries. Its research is characterised by close collaboration with government departments, local and combined authorities, public services, charities and industry partners, ensuring that evidence is co‑produced and directly informed by real‑world challenges.

Policy engagement at the University of Greenwich is supported through dedicated research centres, institutes and professional services that help staff translate research into policy‑relevant insights. Academics regularly contribute to consultations, advisory boards, select committee inquiries and knowledge exchange programmes at local, national and international levels. The university places particular emphasis on place‑based policy, inclusive growth and social justice, reflecting its role as an anchor institution in south‑east London and Kent.

The university is committed to open, accessible and responsible research, actively supporting engagement and impact capacity‑building across all researcher career stages. Through partnerships with policymakers and intermediaries, the university seeks not only to inform policy but also to strengthen the evidence ecosystem and support better decision‑making for public good.

As a member of the University Policy Engagement Network (UPEN), the University of Greenwich is keen to collaborate with peers to share learning, develop best practice and champion the role of universities in shaping effective, inclusive and sustainable policy.
