University of South Wales

Teaching and research at the University of South Wales (USW) are connected to the world around us, engaging with challenges and opportunities to make tomorrow better. USW has an international outlook, welcoming students from over 120 countries to our campuses in Cardiff, Newport and Pontypridd,

We create graduates who are prepared for tomorrow. We offer learning that reflects employer demands, and equip our students with the skills and experience to succeed. Our partnerships and links with industry mean that what our students learn on their course is informed by actual practice and reflects real-life.

Research at USW makes a difference in the real world, changing lives and our world for the better. We’re leading the way in Europe with ground-breaking work in developing sustainable energy solutions, and we’re working with the biggest names in the automotive industry to develop the next generation of low-carbon power systems.

In the latest Research Excellence Framework (REF2014), half of our research was rated world-leading or internationally excellent, providing practical solutions for culture, society and the economy. Highlights from the REF 2014 include:

  • USW’s world-leading and internationally excellent research across the range of the creative industries is ranked top in the UK for its impact
  • In terms of impact, USW’s world-leading research in social policy and criminology is ranked 8th in the UK and top in Wales
  • USW is 15th overall in the UK for world leading research in sports and exercise science

The University Strategy – USW 2030 – sets out our direction for the next decade; a pathway for the future that is bold and ambitious to ensure our continued success and long-term sustainability.
