DASA’s mission is to find and fund innovation to support UK Defence and Security, keeping the nation safe by staying ahead of emerging threats. With a vision for the UK to have strategic advantage through the most innovative defence and security capabilities in the world, DASA achieves this by welcoming and funding ideas from both industry and academia.
DASA routinely runs strategically important challenges and launches funding competitions, which are typically 100% funded, and which aim to accelerate innovative ideas that can solve a wide range of problems. Past challenges have included:
- Enhancing the self-sufficiency of Armed Forces, focusing on power, food, and waste management
- Developing methods to detect toxic gases
- Using data to understand behaviour
- Developing telexistence capabilities to reduce risks to personnel in challenging environments
DASA recognises that cutting-edge solutions often emerge from unexpected sources, and proposals could originate from virtually any field, not just traditional areas of science and technology. It could include improved working methods, enhanced services, or any innovation that boosts the effectiveness of defence and security operations.
Innovations developed with DASA funding include:
- Swansea University’s immersive trauma simulation training to improve pre-hospital trauma care
- University of Sheffield’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) collaborating on telexistence systems for battlefield medical care.
- University of Liverpool’s new sensing capabilities to detect objects that pose threats to space assets.
Revolutionary rocket eats for the stars:
With the help of DASA funding, engineers from the University of Glasgow successfully test-fired a rocket that eats itself for fuel. On working with DASA, Professor Patrick Harkness, of the University of Glasgow’s James Watt School of Engineering, said:
“Our team enjoyed working with DASA. The discussion of our idea and the submission of our proposal was very collaborative, and delivery felt like a shared endeavour with positive contributions from all sides.”
Top tips for how to engage with DASA:
There are various ways to connect with DASA. You could respond to any of the specific challenges that are routinely launched through DASA’s themed calls, or you could propose your own solution through DASA’s Open Call.
